REEL joins Flying Whales’ future airship project

REEL has partnered in the development of the LCA60T project, the code name for the development of a rigid helium-filled airship powered by seven electric motors, capable of hovering to handle heavy loads. This largest airship in the world will be as long as two A380s and as tall as a twelve-story building. The project is led by Flying Whales and supported by the BPI, among others, with €25 million in funding.

REEL will supply the 12 winches that will equip the airship and enable it to lift or deposit 60 tons of cargo in hard-to-reach areas. This onboard system, like the airship itself, is unlike anything else currently available. It will have to meet the safety and weight requirements of all aeronautical equipment and will require the use of new materials for lifting applications.

D’ores et déjà, on peut relever deux marchés d’application :

  • le transport du bois, l’ONF étant partie prenante
  • celui des charges exceptionnelles : pylônes haute tension, pales d’éoliennes.
