REEL, supplier of EPR for Taishan in China

In June 2018, during Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China, the French President announced the final phase of the world’s first EPR nuclear power plant. REEL played a key role in this major milestone: the fuel loading process for the first reactor unit at Taishan, completed in April 2018.

Press release – June 2018

Reliable EPR supplier

REEL is the supplier of EPR fuel handling systems for the Taishan nuclear plant in southeastern China. The equipment includes:

  • a core loading machine,
  • a fuel transfer system between the reactor and fuel buildings,
  • a mast bridge for fuel management,
  • and an auxiliary bridge.

Since 2012, REEL has supported multiple stages of the project. Our teams handled technical supervision, assembly, testing, and commissioning of the equipment.

A Technical Challenge Met with Success

REEL took part in the final and most delicate phase: loading the reactor with fuel. This complex task began in early April 2018. Despite full automation, a first for an EPR, REEL ensured smooth and efficient operations. Our engineers worked onsite alongside CGN’s teams. All performance targets were met.

The objective was ambitious: load 241 fuel assemblies in under 40 hours, 15% faster than second-generation reactors. The same process is scheduled for the second unit next year.
A Trusted Supplier of EPR Projects Worldwide

REEL is also involved in EPR projects at Olkiluoto (Finland), Flamanville (France), and Hinkley Point (UK). For each site, we deliver the same scope of fuel handling systems. With every new project, REEL adapts its technologies to meet even stricter safety and performance requirements.

“Fuel loading at Taishan was a major challenge for REEL. Our systems performed reliably and showcased REEL’s technological leadership. We’re proud to contribute to the launch of this symbol of European and French industry,”

Philippe Frantz, President of REEL
