REEL delivered two high integrity cranes at the SELLAFIELD site (UK). They will be used to recover the 10,000 m3 of radioactive waste stored in 22 concrete silos in the MSSS building (Magnox Swarf Storage Facility) built in the 1960s .
The 55t / 15t “East End Crane” (EEC) installed in the MSSS building will be used for the assembly of waste recovery equipment and the handling of the shielded containers required for the disposal of this waste.
Numerous technical constraints (limited CW reaction loads, reduced volumes, difficult accessibility, specific kinematic chains, etc.), coupled with a relatively short development period, presented a real challenge for our teams and our client SELLAFIELD.
The crane was introduced through the roof into the building at the end of October 2017 using a 500t mobile crane. The commissioning of this crane is scheduled for the first quarter of 2018.
The 63t crane of the “Silo Maintenance Facility” (SMF) will be used for the maintenance of shielded containers and tools used in the MSSS and PFCS buildings (Pile Fuel Cladding Silo).
The SMF crane is also distinguished by strong technical constraints including a 33m span requiring articulated junctions at the beams (to allow its installation in the building).
This crane was installed in August 2017 and has just been commissioned in December 2017.
These two successful projects are considered by SELLAFIELD as major steps for securing the site.
REEL is proud to have contributed again to the activities of Flamanville 3 by providing particularly robust clamps.
REEL Aluminium team will be at the International Aluminium conference at Stands 8 and 9 in Vedanta Meadows Auditorium.
Our teams wish you all the best for this new year.
REEL will be present at the Arab International Aluminum Conference (ARABAL) as a bronze sponsor.
