1959 : REEL’s “Jumbo” dig the Mont-Blanc tunnel

50 years ago  : 1959 – The « Jumbo » of REEL dig the Mont-Blanc tunnel.

Ordered by BORIE SA, designed and manufactured by REEL, the Jumbo is a 75 tons machine, 9 meters high, 8 meters wide and 20 et 20 of length.

It carries 16 air drills and 25 employees.

The 140 holes made at each station are then loaded with explosives and the rock is emptied by wagons …

The average advance of 8 meters  per day, thanks to the Jumbo, allows the French to finish before the Italians on the 14th of August 1962 …

The breakthrough of the Mont-Blanc: A wild race between the French and the Italians !
